An Open Letter to the UK Games Industry:
Standing with Our Trans Colleagues

From the leadership team at Out Making Games

The recent UK Supreme Court ruling redefining the protected characteristic of “sex” in the Equality Act has sent a wave of fear, grief, and anger through the LGBTQ+ community — particularly among trans people. This ruling is more than a legal technicality. It is a reminder to many of our friends, colleagues, and loved ones that their rights, safety, and very existence are still under debate in the eyes of the law.

At Out Making Games, our mission has always been to connect and empower LGBTQ+ people working across the UK games industry. Today, that mission feels more urgent than ever. We know that this moment is painful for many — especially trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming people whose identities are already routinely marginalised and misunderstood. We also know that meaningful solidarity from our allies can make a world of difference. To all of our sponsors and partners — thank you. Your support for OMG and the LGBTQ+ community demonstrates a commitment to inclusion.

It is now time for all of us to meet this moment with courage and clarity. Here are some of the ways that you can support your trans staff and community right now:

1. Affirm your values, publicly.

Make it known that your company supports the rights and dignity of trans people. A clear statement of solidarity, grounded in your company’s values, helps counter the growing climate of hostility and fear.

2. Strengthen internal policies and protections.

Ensure that your workplace policies explicitly protect trans employees from discrimination and harassment. Review internal documents and procedures — including those relating to gender identity, pronoun use, and transition support — to confirm they are inclusive and legally robust.

Ensure that trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming employees can access facilities such as bathrooms and changing rooms that align with their gender. Blanket restrictions or forced disclosure create unsafe and hostile environments — inclusion must be built into your workplace at every level.

3. Offer tangible support.

Where possible, provide access to resources such as:

  • Mental health support, including therapy with providers experienced in working with trans clients

  • Legal advice and support

  • Gender-affirming healthcare benefits

  • Protected time off for medical appointments and transition-related care

4. Invest in education.

Regular, mandatory training for all staff — especially managers and HR teams — is critical. This should include trans inclusion, anti-discrimination, and how to foster a genuinely supportive work environment.

5. Listen, and be present.

Ensure trans voices are heard in your workplace. Consider forming (or supporting) internal LGBTQ+ networks, and take the time to listen to what your staff need — not just in this moment, but every day.

OMG is here to support you in this work. If your team needs advice, resources, or a space to talk through next steps, please reach out. We are part of a growing network of organisations and advocates ready to help make our industry safer, kinder, and more inclusive for everyone.

To our trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming colleagues: We see you. We stand with you. You deserve joy, safety, and the freedom to live your truth. You are not alone.

With love and solidarity,

The OMG Leadership Team
