Trans Awareness in November
November is Transgender Awareness Month in the LGBTQ+ calendar, and it includes several key dates in support of our trans, non-binary, and gender-diverse community.
The first Sunday of the month is Transgender Parent Day, which was established in 2009 to honor and recognize both transgender parents and the parents of transgender children. This day is especially important for transgender parents who may feel isolated or invisible in their communities. It serves as a reminder that transgender parents should not be excluded from conversations about parenting and that they can provide strong, loving, and supportive care for their children.
Then, on November 13th, we mark the beginning of Trans Awareness Week, during which transgender individuals and their allies take action to draw attention to the community. They do this by educating the public about who transgender people are, sharing stories and experiences, and advancing advocacy on issues of prejudice, discrimination, and violence that affect the transgender community. This is particularly crucial at a time when hate crimes against transgender people reported to the police in the UK rose by 11 percent in 2022, according to the Home Office. On average, 13 hate crimes are committed against transgender people each day.
Trans Awareness Week culminates with the Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) on November 20th. This day aims to honor the memory of transgender individuals whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence.
OMG is, and will always be, a safe space for the trans, non-binary, and gender-diverse members of our community.
