Develop 2021 - Spill the Tea
“The challenges facing the LGBTQ+ games industry are…”
We asked, you answered!
At Develop Brighton, OMG hosted ‘Spill the Tea’, a networking event for the LGBTQ+ community in video games, which included tea… and cake! It was a chill, alcohol-free event, and included an engagement exercise for attendees to tell us what you felt the biggest issues facing us in the industry are right now.
In your responses we identified broadly 7 key concerns -
Recognition and validation vs reductionism;
Allies and corporate responsibility;
Specifically trans and non-binary concerns;
as well as bi, ace, intersex and poly;
Compensation/benefits/advancement/emotional labour;
Authentic representation;
Intersectionality;
Online toxicity, isolation, safety, fatigue
We’ll be building these concerns into both our high-level strategy and into planning for individual initiatives throughout the year. Please watch out for more details on our 2022 strategy, and the ways we plan to move forward to address these concerns within our industry.
Of course, the attendees of the event in Brighton are only a subset of the whole community of LGBTQ+ game devs, many of whom can’t make it to Brighton for for a whole raft of reasons.
As OMG we want to hear what everyone in the community has to say - so watch this space for more engagement exercises coming to an online space near you.
